The Lancaster Art Song Society explores vocal music in its many forms - from intimate art songs and independent vocal compositions to sacred and secular choral works, operatic selections, and occasionally songs from the musical theatre tradition.

We believe that Art Song is beautiful, powerful, and impactful! It is our hope to inspire and encourage audiences through music.
We choose to do this by performing and programming art song, both traditional and modern art song, but also through spotlighting other amazing vocal art genres, such as classical and opera. Our hope is that our audiences learn to love art song, but also develop a deeper love and appreciation for all vocal arts.

What is your favorite memory with Lancaster Art Song Society?
One of my favorite memories was our 2023 Season Launch Concert at the Trust Performing Arts Center. It was a surreal experience bringing together professional regional musicians and vocalists alongside our emerging singers in Laus Deo. The young choir members were deeply inspired by the professionals, who offered great encouragement regarding vocal music and technique, and the audience was moved by the collaboration. Everything fell into place perfectly—it was an amazing evening. Soli Deo Gloria.
What initially drew you to this organization?
My daughters and their peers initially inspired me to start a "training choir." The following year, the Trust Performing Arts Center approached me to partner with them to help promote classical voice art forms and build an audience base. That training choir has since grown into an advanced chamber choir of young artists who sing and serve others with excellence.
Heidi Shannon is the founder and executive director of the Lancaster Art Song Society (LASS), a partner of the Trust Performing Arts Center. An accomplished music educator and performer, she has more than 25 years of experience teaching students from kindergarten through the collegiate level. Her multidisciplinary background includes classical voice, world music, movement, and drumming.
